I have a simple productivity tip to help you focus. It’s soooo quick and simple, but it works.
This tip can apply to anyone, but if you sit down to do work in small chunks of time…15 minutes here, 30 minutes there…this tip will apply even more to you!
In this stage of life, I have very little time to do work on the computer. This has been a year of knowing that my focus needs to be on my family over my blog. That has always been the case, but I have had to step back from ideas and potential all in the name of making sure my family comes first.
When I do have a quick 15 minutes on the computer, I often put my planner next to the computer so I can see what I need to do. I found that a small change can make a huge impact to what I get done in that 15 minutes.
Simple Productivity Tip to Help You Focus:
Before sitting down, I now look at my calendar and transfer a small list of tasks to a post-it note. Sitting down at the computer with this post-it note was a game-changer. That seems like a dramatic statement ;), but it’s true!
When I sit down at the computer with my note, I am not distracted with my planner that lists task upon task. My planner includes things I need to get done at home, errands I need to run, things I need to buy, school reminders, blog to-dos, and so much more. It also includes more blog tasks than I can get done in just 15 minutes.
With this small post-it, I can focus just on the small list next to me.
I am not overwhelmed with everything else that I cannot get done right now, because I have turned my focus 100% to my post-it.
It used to be rare that I could shut my mind off from all my other to-dos. But with just a small note beside me, I am able to focus in and shut off the overwhelmed mind that is typically scrolling through my to-do list!
If I have my huge planner list next to me, I see what I am NOT getting done. If I just have my post-it, I can focus on what I AM getting done. It’s amazing that this small mental shift has taken away overwhelm and increased focus.
Bonus points when it becomes a challenge to see if I can get through my whole post-it list. Try it!! Let me know if it works for you.
This tip doesn’t just work if you are sitting down at your computer.
I don’t only do this when I sit down at the computer. Some days I also start the day with a post-it note. I write down a the top to-dos and tasks from my cluttered planner and just focus on the post-it note. It keep me much more focused! It also keeps me from looking at the longer list of tasks on my planner. I become less discouraged because I’m ignoring the longer list and am just focusing on the shorter list on my post-it.
