I was a notorious snoozer. In high school, I would hit the snooze button for 50 minutes…on a good day. I had my own room, so this habit didn’t impact anyone.
In college I had 3 roommates. I’m thankful that for some odd reason they showed an immense amount of patience with me, as my habit didn’t stop when sharing a small space with 3 other sleeping friends. (How inconsiderate of me!)
My husband also is closely associated with the snooze button, so this has not been a point of contention between the two of us. It’s rare that one of us will snarl: Turn. That. Alarm. Off. But it happens.
I have read time and time again how this disrupted sleep when hitting your snooze button every 9 minutes is not good sleep. You think? But as it is with many bad habits, easier said than done.
I’ve heard of people that get out of bed when their alarm goes off. I have to admit I was a little surprised that there are people out there that do not succumb to the little button willing to give you a few more minutes of sleep. I think I asked my sister-in-law once: “You mean, your alarm goes off and you just stand right up and get out of bed??”
I was shocked that it could happen.
Enter: sweet little baby girl three and a half years ago. Babies don’t snooze like alarm clocks do. Funny thought though…I think every mom of the newborn would love that. I would be setting that snooze button for 9 hours. None of this piddly 9 minute junk.
I now have little need for my alarm clock, as I am usually awoken by darling babbles. Or wails.
When I do set the alarm and actually awaken with the beautiful iphone melody rather than a little voice, the snooze button still tempts me.
Add a smidgen of discipline.
I have decided to not allow myself the extra 9 minutes (or 18 or 27 or 54 minutes-it happens) of sleep and shockingly have found out that this simple No Snooze rule is helping me get out of bed refreshed every morning.
I let myself lay there an extra minute or two, but don’t allow myself to fall asleep and I actually pop out of bed. This is a new feeling for me and I’m loving it.
This morning: Alarm went off. I got up and am enjoying a lovely morning. I now hear my husband’s alarm every 9 minutes and I am not envious of the disrupted sleep. I’m enjoying the calm, constant wakefulness.
